Individually, you will write a 6–8-page research paper critically analyzing a specific topic related to
youth media production, representation, industry, culture, or identity. The topic must be an in-depth
examination of an issue addressed in class. Papers should take a critical cultural studies approach and
can include textual analysis, industry analysis, genre analysis, or audience reception/meaning-making.

Topic Selections (can be applied to the media of your choice)
1. Examine how a specific youth population is discursively represented in film, TV, music,
news, consumer culture, time period, or genre.
2. Analyze the ways youth make meaning out of a particular genre, culture, or media format
3. Explore how youth express identity via media or how they form peer communities or
identification with media.
4. Examine how a particular youth media industry, trope, discursive representation, or genre has
evolved throughout time
5. Analyze the value or evolution of teen media within broader media industries.ncorporate concepts, discourses, theories, and observations from class.
Paper should include
o Include your own original analysis, research, & arguments.
o Include a clear thesis statement, logical argument & analysis.
o Incorporate at least two readings from class and at least two scholarly readings of your choice.
Nonacademic sources (e.g., trade journals, journalism, etc.) may be used to support your argument
additionally but are not a substitute for academic literature.
o Use language and writing appropriate for a college-level academic research paper (organized,
correct syntax, free of typos etc.)
o Be written and formatted according to an established style guide (APA, MLA)
