In this
paper, students will analyze how their experience of being a woman, man, or person
of another
gender category or identity influenced their life. Students will focus on one or two
issues or life
domains, such as those discussed in class (e.g., paid work, intimate relationships, parenthood,
education, religion; views or experiences of feminism). Throughout the paper, students will
draw on course readings and other materials to support their points and
arguments.
You’ll want to keep the paper focused on specific experiences and circumstances, not
generalities or abstractions. For example, a female identifying student with a brother could
elaborate on whether they were ever treated differently as children (e.g., chores, parents’
educational expectations for them). You can also elaborate on whether you ever felt you were
treated differently [in your family/paid workforce/school] because you were a
man/woman/other gender. Be sure to provide specific examples of why you felt this way.
Providing another example, a heterosexual student can discuss whether their experience of
being married/cohabiting/other arrangement was any different for their partner than
themselves, and then follow up with the specific ways it’s different (e.g., do they do different
chores or have different responsibilities for paid and unpaid work? Who makes more of the
decisions? Why is that?)
As you begin to think about organizing and writing your paper, you will need to focus on
a one or two issues or life domains throughout the paper, such as those discussed in class (e.g.,
paid work, intimate relationships, parenthood, education, religion; views or experiences of
feminism). Draw on course readings to illustrate the discussion of these themes. Before you
write the details of your paper, become familiar with the literature on the issues to be
discussed. Your paper needs to show the application of research on the topics being
presented.
The organization of your paper will be very important to your overall grade on this
assignment; the paper should include the following sections (clearly labeled):
1. An Introduction to the paper in which you briefly introduce and discuss the issue or life
domains you will focus on (e.g., paid work, intimate relationships, parenthood, education,
religion; views or experiences of feminism).
2. Body will form the bulk of the paper. It is critical that you link your data to concepts,
theories, and issues that we’ve been discussing and reading about in class. *Put each concept
or theory you use in your paper in bold font the first time you use it (and normal font
subsequent times). You can’t discuss all issues; you’ll need to select the ones that are most
clearly related to your topic. Do not simply describe your experience. Students must cite
course readings to receive credit for this assignment but may also cite other materials.
3. The Conclusion should very briefly summarize your discussion. Did it give you any new
insight on issues you learned about this semester?
Presentation requirements include the following:
1. As a rule, follow APA criteria regarding paragraphs, punctuation, font size, margins,
page numbering, and how to include parenthetical notations in the body of the
paper as well as bibliographic references at the end of paper (5 points)
2. Paper length: 3-4 full pages + reference page
3. Use formal academic language; avoid colloquialisms e.g., slang, contractions AND
spell check and proofread before submitting the work (repeated typos, misused
words e.g., there, their
I have attached the 4 sources I want to be used.
The two domains I want to be used is gender in family anf gender in education. For family I would like to highlight what it is like being an eldest daughter in which I was expected to always clean, cook a lot more than my brother. Also my mom being more strict on myself than mybrother. I would also like to talk some about how I witnessed my mom essentially be my “mom and dad” because my father was not very present in my life. She was the epitome of a “strong black mother” however, growing up I have been able to see more sides of her being soft, vulnerable, etc which goes agianst these standards.
For education I would like to talk about how as a girl I was not expected to be great within my academics specifially math/science. To this day people are surprised I major in economics. Although there is nothing wrong with majors like education, pysch, sociology, these are the majors people originally associate with myself. Being in college other men/women have doubted me and thought my answers were wrongin class etc. especially being in a major more so dominated by men.
