Using the
Independent and Dependent variables and research question you explored in your Research
Paper Part I, create an original research design. Select a dataset for your Independent and
Dependent variables from a legitimate source (e.g., General Social Survey, National Election
Study, U.S. Census Data, Department of Justice, Pew Research, World Development Indicators,
etc.); Redact and add to your draft literature review (see Research Paper, Part I above), if needed;
Using the format outlined in the Research Writing Handout on Blackboard, create your theory,
hypothesis, and describe the techniques that you are using to collect and analyze the research
data; Conduct detailed observational analysis and describe the specific quantitative method that
is used to analyze all the data; Draw conclusions; acknowledge shortcomings; and make
recommendations for future research improvement. The paper should comprise approximately
twelve to sixteen pages not including charts, graphs, tables, endnotes, appendices, references,
etc. Language and the ability to succinctly and clearly present background, design, analysis, and
findings are fundamental to empirical research. You will be measured on content, analysis,
adequate depth and breadth of topic, clarity of concepts, organization, grammar, appearance, and
correct MLA usage.
