This assignment is based on the main character’s innocence in the novel “Cartucho” by Nellie Campobello. The topic of the essay is regarding the theme helplessness and despair from the narrator’s perspective. Because of the narrator’s age in the novel, she is only able to see the violence in front of her and try to process it as much as she can. She is unable to help in many ways, due to her age, gender, etc. As her innocence was explored in class discussions, her age played a huge role in how she processed the trauma endured by witnessing a Revolutionary War. There were many instances where the narrator describes certain situations and her perspective is skewed because of her age and her innocence, but in those moments where she felt powerless, she does anything to feel helpful. With her limited resources, her perseverance, strength, and courage are highlighted throughout the novel, but it is important to discuss those moments of vulnerability from the perspective of the reader.
