Use the simple past tense when writing about the past.
Your paper’s introduction should typically be one paragraph (intros can be multiple paragraphs for longer papers). Your introduction should set out the topic to be discussed and articulate a clearly stated thesis. The thesis is a statement that reflects the conclusion that you have reached about your topic after a careful analysis of the sources. A clear thesis is essential for a successful essay. 
Organizing your paper. Think of each paragraph of your paper as a building block in your argument that presents a specific point. Make sure that the point of each paragraph clearly relates to your thesis and begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. The topic sentence should tell the reader what the paragraph will be about.
Each essay should have a conclusion, usually one paragraph long. An effective conclusion brings the paper full circle by reminding the reader of the thesis and reiterating the most important points that were made in support of the thesis. A conclusion also suggests to the reader why the argument is important to the larger topic.
Citing your sources. When you write a paper you must cite all the sources you use, including web pages.  Documenting your sources allows the reader to see where your information came from and assess its value. Always provide a citation when quoting directly from your source. Also, whenever you mention information that is not commonly known, you must provide a reference to your source for this information. For example, if you write that over 180,000 African Americans served in the Union army during the Civil War, you must acknowledge your source for this fact.
For this course, students can use either Chicago Manual of Style or MLA for citations. 
Avoid disembodied quotes. Never simply drop a quotation into your paper. Quotations must be integrated into your own prose. Introduce the speaker/writer of quote to your readers, so they will know who you are quoting.
 
Use block quote format for quotes that are four lines of text or longer.
• A block quote is separated from the rest of the text by a double-space before and after the quote.• It is internally single-spaced.• It is also indented one-half inch on the left to set it apart.• Quotation marks are eliminated.
Do not begin your paper with a global statement. Phrases like “Throughout history…” or “From the beginning of time…” or “People have always wondered about…” should be avoided. Global statements are too vague and don’t give the reader any clue to the subject of your paper.
Book titles should be italicized. For example: Before the Revolution: America’s Ancient Pasts.
Italicize Supreme Court cases. For example: Plessy v. Ferguson.
Proper names of ships and other vessels should be italicized. For example: USS Maine.
Do not overuse semicolons. Using one or two semicolons in your entire paper is acceptable. Anything more is overuse and lazy writing. When in doubt, do not use a semicolon. Instead, rewrite into two or three separate sentences.
Avoid using contractions in a formal paper. For example, write cannot instead of can’t or should not instead of shouldn’t.    
Spell out centuries in formal history papers.  For example, write nineteenth century instead of 19th century.
Regions get capitalized; directions are lower case.  For example: “The South lost the Civil War.” “I drove north on Park Avenue.” 
We no longer use an apostrophe when writing about decades.  Write 1850s, not 1850’s. 
Insert page numbers at the bottom of your paper’s pages.
Proofread your paper at least twice.
