Your first essay for this class is going to be a personal narrative essay. You may choose one of the following prompts:
share a “single story”–or assumption–that people tend to have about a group to which you belong (racial, ethnic, gender, generation, profession, etc)
-OR-
share how you unlearned the “single story” you had about another group of people.
Whichever direction you choose, your narrative must come to some sort of conclusion, demonstrating how this story is relevant on a larger scale. You’ll want to reveal the “truth” behind the “single story,” and explain why it’s important that this is revealed. What is at stake if these wrongful assumptions persist? Perhaps you can include a “call to action” to encourage your readers to challenge their own way of thinking for the better.
-The subject I’m leaning more towards is how in society men can’t show emotions because it would make them less of a man, but that shouldn’t be the case.
